This 1962 Studebaker Champ 1/2 Ton Pickup is a nicely restored half-ton pickup with southern history and is ready to roll! When the Champ debuted in 1960, Studebaker was coming off a brief upswing in financial fortunes due to the sales success of the Lark. With the increased cash flow from the Lark’s success, the struggling South Bend company was able to finally reinvigorate its truck division which had a long history but was lagging at the time. Introduced in 1960, the Champ was Studebaker’s new light-duty Pickup which used borrowed parts from the Lark that were adapted for its new truck. By 1962, Studebaker’s financial troubles had worsened, with the company ultimately exiting the automotive business in 1966. Despite the fact that the Larks had been restyled in ’62, the Champs retained mostly the same look from the previous year. Perhaps the biggest change was that the “Spaceside” box was made standard equipment and the old P1 box with exterior fenders was still an option. This particular Champ comes to us from a southern-based collector who owned the truck for the past 25 years. Under the hood on this ’62 Champ is a 259.2 Cubic Inch V8 engine paired with a single 2 barrel carburetor that pushed out 180 horsepower in its day. The 259 V8 is backed by a Flightomatic Automatic Transmission, ensuring that anybody can take this Champ Pickup Truck for a spin around the block. Back in 1962, many of the Studebaker Champ buyers were thriftier individuals looking for an inexpensive work truck; however, this particular pickup is outfitted with several nice options in addition to the optional Automatic transmission. A right hand exterior rear view mirror is always a welcome addition since it makes maneuvering this Champ in and out of tight spots much easier. This Champ is also equipped with factory turn signals, which didn’t become mandatory on cars until the late sixties. The all-steel 8 foot “Spaceside” pickup box is in wonderful condition, lined with a protective bed liner, and comes with wooden stake sides and a diamond-plate toolbox to boot. Riding on P225/75R15 radial tires on painted steel rims with full wheelcovers and beauty rings, this Champ has a great look and even better ride! The exterior has been refinished in Apache Red giving this truck a stand-out exterior appearance. The interior on this Studebaker pickup has a nice stock look as well! The bench seat has been reupholstered in Red and Grey vinyl. The dash, door panels, and steering wheel are in great shape as well and appear to be in their stock configuration. The dash is equipped with a 120 MPH speedometer, temperature gauge, and fuel gauge, along with an AM radio. Whether you’re adding to your existing truck collection or you’re buying your first classic pickup truck, this 1962 Studebaker Champ 1/2 ton pickup truck would make an excellent choice.
