Antique 1922 Brass US Mail Letter Box Post Office City Drop Box Rare.
This letter box is an original 1922 brass “city box” made in the Navy Yard in Washington DC.  Only 1000 of these boxes were made in brass.  (Though the one in the LBJ library states only about 100 were made). The shining example in the L.B.J. Library and another patinaed example in the Smithsonian National Postal Museum (See Images). Unlike the far more common cast iron boxes, these were designed to address the corrosion issues costal cities were facing with rotting steel letter boxes.
