This is a beautiful Grand Tour era souvenir from Wolfstein, Germany in
the Rhineland. This large ink blotter is made of thick porcelain with a
wood rocker. The porcelain top features hand painted scenes, the first
of the village of Wolfstein with dense houses and a church with the
German text above reading “Erinnerung an Wolfstein” or Memory of
Wolfstein in English. The second scene shows the ruins of Alt-Wolfstein
Castle with text above reading “Erinnerung an Wolfstein
Ruine-Alt-Wolfstein” or Memory of Wolfstein Ruin Alt-Wolfstein in English.
Measures
5 inches long, 2.75 inches deep, 2.75 inches high. Hand painted gold
stripes along the sides and top have been applied. Very good condition,
no chips to the porcelain. There is wear to the gold stripes to the knob
from years of handling. Otherwise, this is a great Victorian blotter
ready to be used or displayed. A neat piece from the era of travel
during the late 1800s.
