LOT OF TWO SOVIET ITEMS:
Young Pioneer Membership tie or Neckerchief
(Galstuk) + Young Pioneer Membership Badge.
Both are GUARANTEED 100% ORIGINAL, Soviet period items, required
attributes of the original uniform of Soviet Young Pioneers Communist Youth.
These are NOT recent copies or post-Soviet issues.
The
Young Pioneer Tie
is made of artificial silk
and measures 38″ x 11 1/2″. There is sewn-in paper tag of a factory
in Uzhgorod region of Soviet Ukraine which shows an ink stamp with a 1990 date
of manufacture.
It’s in EXCELLENT unissued condition with only a few creases from long
storage that will disappear with proper steaming or ironing (be careful not to
burn it!)
There are two very interesting things to note about the classic
red Pioneer tie. First, as a member of the organization you might get by if you
forgot to wear your membership pin, but if you forgot to wear your red tie?
Well, it was not a forgivable offense!
Second, unlike other youth organizations around the world that
wear or have worn kerchiefs, Pioneer ties were cut in a triangular shape to
begin with, not sewn square and then folded in half by each young member to
make a nice triangle!
The
Young Pioneer membership badge
is made in
aluminum and paint, and measures approximately 25 mm tall x 22 mm wide. The
reverse shows Soviet factory logo and the price (even in the worker’s paradise,
the Communist Youth pins weren’t free!) The badge is in Excellent condition:
shows storage age only, no chips or wear to the paint. The pin attachment is
fully functional.
This badge was the official emblem of the Young Pioneers
organization that included almost all kids from 9 to 14 years, and was a
steppingstone on the way to becoming a member of the VLKSM (Lenin Communist
Youth League, aka Komsomol). One of the VLKSM official functions was
supervision and communist indoctrination of Young Pioneers.
Note that the three points of the flame above Lenin’s head
represent “three pillars” of Communist youth: the elementary school age
Octoberists, the Pioneers, and the older Komsomol members.  This is also
the symbolism behind the three corners of the red tie.
Please note: the white shirt in our photos is not included with
the tie and badge.
