A wonderfully rare and fascinating antique brooch.
Made from a pocket watch part, Swiss, about 1825, it’s richly gilded metal and is set with pearls, a faceted blue glass stone and its original tiny diamond watch jewel – rose cut to the visible side and with a very special glisten thanks to its unique hand cut nature. With Victorian period fittings and safety chain, for wear as a brooch.
At just shy of 200 years old, the craftsmanship has to be seen to be believed. These more visible sections of a watch movement were passed from master craftsman to master craftsman to reach these levels of perfection. The engraving is unbelievably fine and minuscule, with extreme detail and stylized artistry that very cleverly incorporates the shape and use of each part.
Complete with an original, genuine blued steel watch screw as part of the decoration, my favourite part of this brooch is the tiny hare and snail at opposite ends of the regulator index – these denote how the wearer would have been able to compensate the original watch to be slightly faster or slower as needed.
It’s an excellent size at just shy of 1.5″
and is in excellent, fully wearable condition throughout, with no loss or damage. It weighs 10.6 grams.
