: Baroque Period (1650-1800) Hand-Painted Heartbreaker Brooch with Simple “C” Clasp & Extended Pin
As They were Rarely Marked,
Determining the Age of Early Antiques is Typically Deductive. However, this One meets the Criteria so Impeccably, at Least it is Deducible.
This Piece dates back to the Baroque Period it Portrays: the Cherubic Face, Dark Eyes, Pink Ensemble, Fine Pearls, and Elaborate Headdress the Young Lady Presents with are Precisely Representative of the
Feminine Ideal during the 1st Half of the
Classical Baroque Era (See RESEARCH Below). On Beauty Alone, She’d be a Femme Fatale of any era.
Moreover, Historically, the Earliest Known Version of Clasp is the “C” Clasp
with the “C” extending approximately 75% around in a circle and bending slightly inward
. Too, in the Earliest Versions thereof, the Pin Extends Beyond the Clasp. The Clasp on the Current Brooch Matches All of said Criteria Exactly (Again, Please See the RESEARCH below on Clasps).
The Piece also Presents with the Sort of Surface Wear & Patina  One might Anticipate in a Responsibly Preserved Antique Some 2+ Centuries Old.
Finally, and most Obviously, it Predates Photography, which became Commercially Available in
1838.

There are different types of clasps that hold a pin onto your clothing. The first type is a simple C clasp, which also happens to be the oldest. The oldest C-clasps have no locking mechanism. For extra security, the they made the pin itself longer, so when you’re looking at the pin’s front side, the point extends beyond the piece.

Collecting vintage jewelry requires learning the various clues to dating a piece. For example, old C-Clasps on brooches generally indicate that piece is before the 1900’s and the longer the pin extends beyond the brooch, the older it’s liable to be dating to the mid 1800’s.  Here’s an example of an old or simple C-clasp; note there is no rollover or locking mechanism and the C extends approximately 75% around the circle and bends inward. These were used almost exclusively through the Georgian era.

The Baroque Period in all its Grandiloquence

The rise of Louis XIV, the Sun King, and his court at Versailles, signaled the dawn of the Classical Baroque era in art, architecture, music, and fashion.  It was defined by natural, curving silhouettes, flowing lines, gold filigree, rich colors, and overall voluptuousness.  Clothing contained an abundance of lace, pearls, ribbons, and gold embroidery, and was refreshingly free from the excessive decoration of the Renaissance.
Women.
Women’s clothing became much less restricting. Flowing lace collars replaced stiff ruffs.  The plunging neckline called the
décolletage
became common, often accompanied with wide lace collars. Solid-colored silks and brocades were used more often than patterned fabrics, and usually decorations consisted only of lace, tied  or rosetted ribbons, limited embroidery, and simple pearl jewelry.
Women wore their hair in tight curls at the forehead and on both sides of the head, called “heartbreakers,” during the first half of the period. Lips and cheeks were often rouged, something previously only done by courtesans.  Face patches made of silk and velvet and cut into small shapes became very popular.  Jewelry was very simple during this period, consisting of single strings of pearls or diamonds or sometimes a ribbon tied around the neck.
